Apolonia’s 12 husbands
The series consists of twelve male portraits, each titled after a month of the year, from January to December. Together, they evoke twelve stages of life, twelve states of mind, and twelve visions of masculinity, or of the ideal man. Richly intertextual, the paintings draw on the history of portraiture and painterly motifs while also alluding to specific individuals, including Christian Bayle, Nicolas Cage, and Zbigniew Wodecki.
The series is accompanied by a small artist’s book featuring an essay by Joanna Bator, Apolonia Dwurnik’s Pocket Atlas of Husbands, published by Krupa Gallery in 2019.
