Alcina’s Island

In Ludovico Ariosto’s 16th-century epic poem Orlando Furioso, Alcina is an emancipated deceptive enchantress. She rules a magical, illusion-filled island and seduces valiant knights who she then turns into animals or plants.

The power, independence and autonomy of Alcina are truly fascinating, yet she is presented and perceived as an evil witch and severally punished. Pola Dwurnik has been painting Alcina’s victory. The artist reinterprets the character anew and provides a story of complicated yet fascinating relations between humans and nature.
